OFFSHORE TUNA FISHING CHARTER
(SEPTEMBER TO JUNE) – FULL DAY
1-3 GUESTS
You watch your line go tight and a second later the reel starts screaming as line is peeled off so fast you think it’s going to explode!! It’s time to clip in and enjoy the ride!! Cape Town and the nutrient rich waters off Cape Point offer some of the finest and most exciting Yellowfin tuna fishing in the world. For those of you that don’t know, the Yellowfin tuna (Thunnus Albacares ) is undoubtedly the strongest fighting fish in the tuna family. After leaving Hout Bay we will take you anywhere between 15 and 40 miles offshore in search of your dream fish. We will target Yellowfin and Longfin tuna but occasionally Bigeye tuna ( Thunnus Obesus ) and recently Southern Bluefin tuna ( Thunnus Maccoyii ) are also caught.
The Yellowfin tuna generally gather around the trawlers and longliners waiting for scraps to eat. We will use 3 methods to catch them, namely trolling, baiting and popping and spinning. Sizes range from 15kg to 90kg ( averaging around 45kg ) but every season a few fish over 100kg are caught.
Longfin tuna ( Thunnus Alalunga ) range from 5kg to 25kg ( averaging around 10kg ) and are great fun on light tackle, especially for youngsters. Dorado, Skipjack tuna, Mako sharks and Blue sharks are also caught. All sharks are released.
Dolphins, whales, Oceanic sunfish and many species of pelagic birds are also seen whilst travelling out to the tuna grounds. Occassionally there are sightings of killer whales off Cape Point.
We will fish until around 3pm depending on sea and fishing conditions and have you back in harbour by 5pm.
Snacks, lunch, coffee and drinks will be provided.
